BACKgroundGail Anderson is a design hero of mine. Her work as a designer is impactful to me because of her strong catalog and influence in the design world. After looking through her large catalog and thinking about the most important pieces of information about her, I made an instagram slide carousel inspired by all aspects of her work, including bright colors, experimental text, and large glyphs. I designed a short animation for the first slide that focuses on a stamp and used stamp shapes in the static slides because she designed the 150th anniversary stamp for the emancipation proclamation, which is her personal favorite work. I also used experimental typography that is a signature in many of her poster designs with the School of Visual Arts NYC.
researchGail Anderson is a trailblazer for women in design. She is the first woman of color to be honored with the American National Design Awards’ Lifetime Achievement. She worked at Rolling Stone and contributed to many innovative editorial designs. She embeds playful humor in her work through lyrical and expressive typography, which I really admire and wanted to reference in my work. She co-authored several books on design, illustration, & typography. “Type Tells Tales” is one of those books. She love communication through design the most.
